Accelerative Options Accelerative options may be considered for a student in either a non-traditional programming procedure or in conjunction with the gifted and talented processes established in Board policy 342.3. Accelerative options are based on the belief that all students should be challenged at their individual skill and ability levels. It is recognized that uniquely qualified students may best be challenged by utilizing a modification of traditionally recommended educational programming. It is the goal of the school district to challenge all students in the regular classroom. A request for a student to be accelerated may be initiated by a parent/guardian, professional staff or counselor by way of a discussion with a building guidance counselor or principal. Several factors need to be considered when considering a student for accelerative options:
Specific guidelines may be established for particular accelerative options such as math at the middle school and science at the high school. A building level team (i.e., collaborative support team) which may include content/grade specific teachers, guidance counselors, administration, parents, and/or students will meet to reach consensus on a decision to accelerate. If accelerative options are recommended, the plan will be documented on a Non-Traditional Programming form or GT form. A probationary period may be considered. |
